Chinese New Year

This week we have been looking at Chinese New Year making and creating in activities to do with this topic. First we made a Chinese restaurant for children to play in the role play area. They really enjoyed this activity using skills such as answering the phone, taking food orders, cooking and trying to pick up pretend food with chop sticks.

We have also made Chinese New Year cards using gold pen to copy Chinese good luck letters on the front, inside the cards children wrote Kung Hey Fat Choy to say happy new year to their friends and families.

Another activity children enjoyed is making dragon puppets using paper and lollipop sticks. Children used skills such as cutting, sticking, folding and colouring.

We had a look at some Chinese symbols and how they were very different to the letters we use in English writing. We matched up the symbols to the letters and used a small paintbrush to write our names in Chinese symbols.

Our journey to school

This week we have been looking at what we see on our journey to school and talking about how we get to school. We have made maps of our journey to school and talked about what we walk or drive past.

Reception have also been using The Lingo Show on Cbeebies to help us learn some Polish words and our friends who speak Polish have been helping us.

On Friday we had a cookery day and made Pizza Worlds. We decorated the pizzas with vegetables to make them look like World. They smelt delicious but the children didn't want to share with the teachers so we didn't get to taste them!

Our Local Area

This week we have been looking at where our homes are found in the local area. We have looked at what we can see from our playground and talked about what we like about Ellesmere Port.

We have also been talking about the weather and making our own weather map and rain collector. When we find out a bit more about our local weather we will start to compare it with weather in other countries.

Reception have also been working hard to find rhyming words and have been playing lots of rhyming pairs games.

Welcome Back!

Happy New Year, we hope you all had a lovely Christmas!

This week we have been settling back into school and talking about our Christmas.

Some of the children had been looking at the birds through the window and in the playground. We talked about how the birds find it hard to find food in the Winter and how we can help them. The children made some bird feeders which we are going to hang up and watch to see which birds come and feed off them.

As well as feeding the birds we have also been feeding ourselves! We have been tasting different types of fruit and made them into a fruit salad. Pineapple and raspberries were our favourite.

We are also going to be talking about Our World and starting with our local area. We love building in our class so our blocks are going to help us build some of the buildings we might find in the local area.
